Fire Safety in the Community
Owatonna Fire Department performs numerous fire safety events throughout the year. The fire department will provide presentations on fire safety and related topics to groups and organizations. A fire safety event may be requested online or by calling the fire station.
The fire extinguisher training sessions typically last for about one hour. These sessions are led by professional firefighters and cover:
- PASS method of extinguishing
- When to use and not use an extinguisher
- Types of extinguishers
- Hands-on demonstration
The facility is responsible for supplying the extinguishers needed for training. It is advisable to reach out to the company that maintains your extinguishers, as they might have extras available for training use. Generally, one 5-pound extinguisher is sufficient for five individuals to use during the hands-on portion of the training. An open area of your parking lot will be required to set up the burn pan for the hands-on portion of the training. Please ensure this is arranged in advance.
Fire extinguisher training is contingent on weather conditions and may be canceled or rescheduled according to weather predictions.
Fire safety presentations can be customized to fit your agenda. All firefighters can discuss various topics including:
- Fire escape plans
- Fire safety tips for work and home
- Personal safety tips
- Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
When scheduling the presentation, include as many details as possible. This will help ensure that the firefighters can deliver the specific information you need.
Any group can make an appointment to visit the fire station. They will be given a tour of the station and apparatus bay. They will see all the fire trucks and where the firefighters work every day.
General Information
- Children must be 4 years old or older to participate (exceptions may be made, depending on situation).
- Only one tour per day will be scheduled. If you have more than one group, you will need to schedule tours on different days.
- Tours are scheduled between the hours of 10 AM and 3 PM.
- Tours may be canceled at the last minute with no notification due to emergency response.
- For large groups of children, we prefer to break them into appropriate age groups and schedule separate tours for each group.
- Firefighting is a critical job. While birthday party groups that meet the age and size criteria can enjoy a tour of the station, the celebration itself, including cake and ice cream, should take place elsewhere.
- The maximum number of participants is 25 (including chaperons). We request a minimum of one chaperon for every five children.
- Although our fire station welcomes walk-in visitors, we advise scheduling an appointment to ensure a firefighter is available to meet with you. Our firefighters have busy schedules, and without an appointment, we cannot guarantee their presence at the station.
A truck visit will include a firefighter describing the features of the fire truck and explaining the tools and equipment on the truck. They may also show their firefighting gear and let the children spray the fire hose.

- We've stopped visiting in-home daycares because the majority of children there are below our age criteria. They'll have numerous opportunities to interact with us during their preschool and elementary school years.
- The minimum group size is 15.
- A parking area must be provided where the fire truck can get in and out quickly in the event of an emergency.
- Truck visits are subject to weather conditions and may be adjusted or postponed based on weather forecasts.
