City of Owatonna Selects Next Director of Public Works
OWATONNA, March 10, 2023 – The City of Owatonna announces Assistant City Engineer Sean Murphy has been selected to serve as the Public Works Department’s next Director. Murphy’s promotion became effective March 12, 2023.
The City of Owatonna conducted a comprehensive selection process to identify the next Director of Public Works. The opening was advertised on local (City website), state (League of MN Cities) and national (Indeed) job boards. The selection process included two rounds of interviews in February and March with panel members consisting of representatives of the City Council, City leadership and community public employer engineers.
“Sean’s education, experience and background make him an excellent fit for the City of Owatonna,” said City Administrator Kris Busse. “We are fortunate to have an individual like Sean to lead our Public Works Department!”
Murphy previously served the department as the Assistant City Engineer and Interim Public Works Director. He has diverse engineering and leadership experience with the Minnesota Department of Transportation and private engineering firms. Murphy earned his bachelors’ degree in Civil Engineering Technology from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York.
“The positive working relationships Sean has built within our organization and community have positioned him to be successful in this key role,” Busse continued. “Those relationships, paired with his education, training and the commitment to our community he has shown have demonstrated that he will lead this department in alignment with the City’s purpose and values.”
