"My Car Does What?"

Understanding your vehicle’s safety features can help you stay in control and avoid crashes, especially in winter conditions. The National Safety Council's "My Car Does What?" campaign helps drivers learn about the built-in safety technologies in their vehicles and how to use them effectively. A quick vehicle search will tell you which are built in and how they can help you stay safe on the road. For example, understanding how features like traction control and anti-lock brakes work ensures you use them properly when needed.

  • Traction control – Standard on most vehicles, this feature helps maintain grip on snowy, icy or wet roads, especially when accelerating or climbing hills.
  • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) – Prevents wheel lock-up and allows you to steer during emergency braking. If you feel vibrations or pulsing in the brake pedal, it’s working – just keep steady pressure on the brakes.

No matter how advanced your vehicle’s technology is – you are its best safety feature. Take time to learn your vehicle’s capabilities to help you stay safe and in control on the road.
