WINTER SURVIVAL TIPS

Minnesota winters can be brutal with temperatures often dipping below zero and wind chills reaching dangerous levels. With the recent cold snap, it's more important than ever to stay safe and prepared while on the road. Each year, many Minnesotans get stranded during the winter, and exposure can become life-threatening in minutes. These winter survival tips from Homeland Security and Management (HSEM) could save your life:

Before you travel:

  • Plan ahead and check road conditions.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full.
  • Make sure your vehicle is winter-ready with proper maintenance and emergency supplies.
  • Pack a winter survival kit.

During your trip:

  • Stay aware of weather updates and dress appropriately.
  • Let someone know your route and expected arrival time.
  • If stranded, stay in your vehicle – it’s your best shelter.
  • Avoid overexertion; shoveling or pushing your vehicle can be dangerous.

Staying warm and safe:

  • Keep air circulating to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Move around inside your vehicle to stay warm.
  • Survival is the goal – stay calm and wait for help.

Winter can be harsh, but smart preparation can make all the difference!
