Construction Site Stormwater Management & Pollution Prevention

Uncontrolled stormwater runoff from construction sites can significantly impact rivers, lakes and estuaries. Sediment in water-bodies from construction sites can reduce the amount of sunlight reaching aquatic plants, clog fish gills, smother aquatic habitat and spawning areas, and impede navigation.

According to the EPA, sediment runoff rates from construction sites are typically 10 to 20 times greater than those of agricultural lands, and 1,000 to 2,000 times greater than those for forest lands.

During a short period of time, construction sites can contribute more sediment to streams than can be deposited naturally during several decades.
