Public Works
The mission of the Public Works Department is to provide for the effective and efficient design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the City's infrastructure.
Public Works provides a wide range of services including:
- Development Review
- Engineering Design
- Environmental Quality
- Fleet Services
- Forestry
- Infrastructure Maintenance
- Street Maintenance
- Online Public Works Permitting
The department ensures that the City's infrastructure is safe and well maintained, which supports the quality of life and serves as a foundation of a healthy economy. As guided by the City's Strategic Plan, Public Works serves as a steward of the City's physical assets and ensures that residents live in a safe, secure, and thriving community.
The Public Works Department is organized into several divisions. These divisions work together to coordinate services and achieve the following objectives:
- To provide and maintain the municipal street, alley, and sidewalk systems
- To provide convenient, well-maintained parking facilities in the downtown area
- To provide quality fleet services through maintenance and repair, to prolong the life of City equipment
- To provide and operate a community Wastewater Treatment Facility
- To provide and operate a Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4)
- To provide and properly manage a yard waste compost site
- To protect the environment through the administration of programs and permits
- To maintain a healthy and diverse urban forest
- To provide utility services to our customers in a safe, cost-effective manner
- To provide design, maintenance, and construction of Owatonna's transportation system
